CHOOSING THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR

Finding the right painting contractor can be a tiring experience, but don’t loose hope.  Here are a few helpful tips to make the process less daunting.

PLANNING YOUR PROJECT

Plan your home improvement carefully.  Give detailed layouts of what you want as a finished project, include:  colors, type of finishes and where to be applied.

“YOU’RE THE BOSS!”

PRICING

The low bid is not always a bargain.  It may be the start of homeowners horror story.  There are lots of reasons to be suspicious of a price that is substantially lower than the others, such as: unlicensed or uninsured contractor, inexperience labor, use of lesser quality products, not having the experience to do the job you envisioned, just to name a few.

“PICK A PRO!”

ASK FOR REFERENCES

A professional painting contractor will have references that you may contact, and be happy to assist you in doing so.  Here are a few references to request, and some questions to ask them:

·         Clients with a current job in progress

·         Clients within the past 12 months

·         Clients within the past 3 years or more

·         How is the quality of the workmanship?

·         How well did the contractor stay to the original quote?

·         How was the contractor about changes?

·         Did the contractor complete the job in a timely manor?

·         Did they keep the job site clean & safe?

·         How well does his work & warranty hold up?

“DOES IT STAND THE TEST OF TIME”

SIGNING CONTRACTS & PAYMENTS

A reputable painting contractor will never pressure you into signing a contract, nor will he have an unreasonable payment option, please watch for the following warning signs:

·         Will only accept payment in cash

·         Wants you to pay for the entire project in advance

·         You must sign contract today or the price might go up

“BUYER BEWARE”

LICENSE & INSURANCE

In the state of Arizona, a painting contractor is required to hold a C-34 contracting license for residential painting, and supply you with that license number;  he’s also required to hold General Liability Insurance and Workmen’s Compensation Insurance for his employees.  For current license standing of a painting contractor, contact
